Upon receiving accreditation by the Nicaraguan Ministry of Education, the GCEC started offering elementary education to first grade students in the 2017 school year. Our long-term development plans are to grow one classroom and one grade level a year, offering second grade in 2018, third grade in 2019 and so forth until we have a comprehensive elementary education from first through 6th grade. At all levels, we hope to provide a comprehensive course of study. During these formative years, it is our goal to instill in our students responsibility, Christian values and character, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills. Our instructional program includes Bible, math, science, language arts, and social studies, all of which are taught in Spanish by national teachers. In addition to the core classes, elementary students receive daily English class, bi-weekly physical education, and weekly chapel. Students are evaluated on academic progress, personal conduct, as well as effort and participation.
SCHEDULE AND LEVELS
Currently, there is one morning section for first through third grade and we will add one grade level per year until our elementary school is complete. Each grade level is taught by a dedicated Nicaraguan teacher. Classes are limited to 25 students. The school day for our elementary students is from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. English is taught by U.S. volunteers fluent in English.
The GCEC has developed a wide plan of study for all grade levels that incorporates the standards established by the Ministry of Education, promotes active learning application, and integrates a Biblical worldview.
In our elementary grades, we use a variety of textbooks and materials for our school subjects, including but not limited to Santillana books for mathematics, language arts, social studies, and science. We incorporate Santillana for Bible, and for our English as a second language program we use comprehensive materials available through ESL KidStuff membership.
